| SEPA is committed to sponsoring an accompanier to live in Santa Elena for a period of several months to respond to alerts about human rights violations, to do education, outreach and advocacy about conditions in Guatemala, and to develop a deep and lasting relationship with the people of Santa Elena. Accompaniers provide a measure of security against potential human rights vioaltions and also serve as a liaison between SEPA and Santa Elena. SEPA organizes delegations to Santa Elena and raises money for projects initiated by the community of Santa Elena. Guatemalan Civil War
In 1981- 82, at the height of the Guatemalan Army's genocidal "scorched Earth campaign," these families were forced to flee their lands and take refuge in Mexico. Now they have returned to create a new life in their homeland. In a time of fragile and uncertain peace, these people of Santa Elena are requesting accompaniment and solidarity with the international community. |
